PRACHI BARI WHEN this service was announced last year, most of the residents made a beeline to the PMC offices to find out how one could get their UID. However, most soon realised the futility of the exercise since the UID machines were yet to be installed. Many a time, as preelection gimmicks, local corporators set up booths to help the residents, usually armed with a sole machine sponsored by a nationalised bank or a state bank. PMC ward offices were supposed to be equipped with these machines earlier last year. When the machines did arrive at the office, only two were found to be in working condition, out of which, only one worked as per the stipulated norms. After more than six months of inaction, Aundh Vikas Mandal (AVM) decided to pitch in and help the people eager to complete the UID process. "For Aundh, Baner, Pashan, Sus and Balewadi, which all fall under the jurisdiction of the Aundh ward, five machines were made available for citizens to register for UIDs, out of which four are working. These numbers are hopelessly inadequate to cover a population of 2.2 lakh, which resides in the suburbs mentioned above. Another two machines have also been installed at the Pune University post office, again with only one of them working on most days. Therefore citizens find it very cumbersome to travel from far flung places, wait in long queues to get these UIDs registered," stated Girish Deshpande, a member of AVM. "I fail to understand why the government fails to provide adequate registration The UID machines have been set up in the following places: Mata Ramambai Ambedkar School, Chikalwadi, Aundh road Dr Rajendra Prasad School No 59, Bopodi railway gate Bapurao Gendba Shewale Dispensary Aundh road Indira Gandhi school No 87 and 42, Aundh Venutai Chavan school No 135, Sutarwadi, Pashan Sant Tukaram School, Pashan Aundh ITI road-Patil Hospital Lending a mutual helping hand! Why is the State not provisioning the required facilities despite the local authority requesting for them? Is this a ploy to deliberately encourage local aspiring politicians from conventional parties to score brownie points by setting up form-collection kiosks at various locations to further their visibility and political careers?" demanded AVM. SOME RESPITE: Finally, on the threshold of the New Year, PMC ward Officer Jayant Bhosekar revealed that 18 machines have been received by the ward office, which will be there to stay for almost a year from now. "Though we have received 18 machines, we will initially begin operating with seven machines spread across Aundh, Baner and Pashan.
